“Father! You promised! If I found a mortal worthy enough, you would make them immortal and I could be with them forever! Terrwyn is that mortal!” The Goddess Brighid stood in front of her father with her arms crossed over her bosom in frustration.
“I know I did, but the others–” the Dagda began to respond, but an angry Brighid cut him off.
“The others did not sacrifice their child for the sake of Gods and men. My son died so that the clans would stop warring. Humans and Gods alike came together in peace after Ruandan’s death.”
“It was not his death that brought peace, Brighid. It was your grief.” The Goddess’ father looked down at her from his throne of thick branches with sorrow in his eyes.
“No matter. It was my sacrifice that made peace possible. You owe me! I have searched for a thousand years and my mate has finally come. And now… now you would deny me?”
“What of your husband?” he questioned, rising and walking to meet her where she stood beside his monstrosity of a cauldron. “What does he have to say about your mortal woman?”
“What can he say? There is no love between Bres and I, there never was. He was the first sacrifice I was expected to make in the name of peace. Do you remember, Father?”
Brighid’s voice dripped with sarcasm as she nearly spat the words at the brute of a man who stood next to her. Of course he remembered. It was the Dagda that had arranged her marriage to a human king in an attempt at peace. Instead, it had caused more anger and the result was the eventual loss of her son. Bres had been made immortal thanks to the marriage contract between them. Brighid bristled at the thought and continued.
“Besides, he has taken hundreds of lovers since we exchanged our vows. He has no right to say anything about Terrwyn. I will be the one who decides to whom I will give my love.” Her emerald green eyes filled with tears and met the dark brown orbs of the large, bearded God that stood before her. “Please, Father… look! See how she fights in my name!” Brighid pleaded as she pointed toward the dark liquids of the large black pot. “Look at her!”
